McCaul Statement on White House CVE Summit

Today, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Obama administration's summit on countering violent extremism (CVE):

Chairman McCaul: "This administration has not taken the threat from violent Islamist extremism seriously. They still have no clear budget for combating domestic radicalization, have put no agency in charge, and have been unable to tell Congress how many people are working on the problem. They won't even call the threat what it is. How can you talk about defeating an enemy you cannot name?

"Instead of simply making speeches this week, I urge the president to overhaul his strategy and to develop a bold, actionable plan to confront violent Islamist extremism worldwide and to immediately staunch the flow of fighters seeking to join these barbarians."

Last week, Chairman McCaul laid out his 7-point plan to defeat violent Islamist extremism and protect Americans from this terrorist threat. Chairman McCaul has also sent numerous letters to the White House expressing his concern for the way they are handling this threat, with no response.

Chairman McCaul, at a hearing last week to examine the administration's strategy to counter violent Islamist extremism, announced the launch of a bipartisan task force on combating terrorist and foreign fighter travel. This task force will provide additional oversight on the administration's approach to defending Americans against this threat.
