Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the cyber breach at Anthem Inc., a health insurance plan provider.

Chairman McCaul: "This attack is another reminder of the persistent threats we face, and the need for Congress to take aggressive action to remove legal barriers for sharing cyber threat information. I will lead this effort with other committees in the house and senate to ensure we move forward with greatly needed cybersecurity legislation as soon as possible."

Last year, Congress passed bipartisan legislation to strengthen cybersecurity, providing a foundation for additional comprehensive cyber legislation. The bills -- which were signed into law by the president -- bolster efforts to combat cyberattacks on vital digital networks by establishing the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to facilitate cybersecurity and protect Americans' civil liberties. The legislation also strengthens DHS's cybersecurity workforce and clarify the department's role in protecting federal networks.
