Wilson, Langevin Lead Roundtable on Threats to U.S. National Security

Reps. Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Jim Langevin (D-RI), respectively Chairman and Ranking Member of the Emerging Threats and Capabilities, hosted a closed roundtable for committee members on Thursday, February 5, entitled Understanding Today's Challenges and Tomorrow's Threats to U.S. National Security.

Following the roundtable, Chairman Wilson said:

"For this subcommittee's first event in the 114th Congress, Mr. Langevin and I thought it would be useful for us to take time to set the security stage as we begin reviewing the President's Budget request and crafting the National Defense Authorization Act.

"To do that, we heard from a distinguished group of thinkers who shared their thoughts on the current security situation, and the ways in which we should be evaluating the current budget request.

"The roundtable provided members of the subcommittee a chance to examine the importance of an integrated national security strategy and the key role resiliency and adaptability must play in defense planning. We also discussed deterrence through conventional tools, as well as how cyber deterrence might work. Finally, we talked about how the U.S. must better understand our adversary's strategic planning so we can adapt to any unconventional threats those plans present."
