Cramer Statement on Department of Homeland Security Funding

Congressman Kevin Cramer (R-ND) made the following comments concerning the status of legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security.

"Today the House of Representatives moved quickly to form a Conference Committee with the Senate so policy differences for Department of Homeland Security can be worked out. While completely ignored by the Senate in recent years, Conference Committees are the tool used to reconcile differences in a spirit of compromise when the two chambers disagree on a bill. The Homeland Security Appropriations Bill passed in the House on January 14, 2015 and sat in the Senate for six weeks while Democrats filibustered the bill. At the final hour before funding expired, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offered an amendment, removing Republican immigration policy riders and the Senate passed their version of the Homeland Security appropriations bill. The House of Representatives stands ready to fulfill its constitutional obligations and work with the Senate in a Conference Committee to get a final bill both chambers can agree to pass. I urge the Senate to act as quickly as we did in the House and move to a Conference Committee so deliberations can begin on this legislation."
