Statement

U.S. Representative Sean Duffy (WI-07) responded to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) release of key findings of clinical review of opioid practices in Tomah:

Rep. Duffy said, "The VA's findings make it even more maddening that the Inspector General (IG) sealed their initial report. They had the facts and did not expose them in an effort to protect the identities of VA employees. That decision was to the detriment and death of Wisconsin Veterans."

The VA found that Tomah patients were 2.5 times more likely than the national average to be prescribed opioids greater than 400 morphine equivalents per day, and were also more likely than the national average to be prescribed opioid doses between 200-300 morphine equivalents per day.

"I'm glad the VA is sending top level officials to meet with our community in Tomah, but we must go beyond polite conversations," continued Duffy. "We must continue to push for increased transparency -- and accountability -- from the Tomah VA, and the VA as a whole. The families of the deceased, and this community, deserve answers. That is what we will seek to get at the hearing on March 30th."
