Congresswoman Matsui Tours Folsom Dam with Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) toured Folsom Dam and the Joint Federal Project with Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, allowing the Secretary to see the realities of California's drought firsthand. The two discussed federal action that can be taken to help assist California during the drought. While in Sacramento, Secretary Jewell also announced that the Bureau of Reclamation is making $50 million in funds available immediately for drought relief projects in the West, including nearly $20 million for California's Central Valley Project.

"California has the most variable weather extremes in the country. That is why it is critical we have an ongoing discussion about California's severe drought and find solutions that will help us meet the water challenges of the 21st century said Congresswoman Matsui. I am also glad to see Secretary Jewell come to Sacramento to see the impacts of drought and our weather impacts firsthand. The funding announced today is another step that we must build off of to ensure drought relief reaches all of California -- including Northern California and the rest of the Central Valley. Sacramento residents have reduced their water use by 20% and I am confident that with federal support we can do even more."

"Today's funding will help boost immediate and long-term efforts to improve water efficiencies and increase resilience in high-risk communities, including California's Central Valley.
