Lujan Calls for A Vote on Clean DHS Funding Bill

Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico's Third District joined with House Democrats this morning to urge Republicans to stop playing politics with national security and allow a vote on a clean bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With funding set to expire at the end of the month, House Republicans have only scheduled four legislative days to address this critical issue.

"It is time for Congressional Republicans to stop putting their political security ahead of our national security and pass a clean bill rather than cater to the extreme anti-immigration wing of their party that is willing to sacrifice our nation's security in order to attack DREAMers," Congressman Luján said. "Already Congressional Republicans' failure to provide long-term funding has negatively impacted the Department of Homeland Security. Missing the next deadline would not only threaten our national security, it would also harm the many New Mexicans who work for the Department and would be left without a paycheck. Republicans should end these political games and put our national security first."

Earlier this week, Luján cosponsored a clean bill that avoids a shutdown of the agency charged with coordinating efforts to prevent and respond to acts of terrorism by funding DHS through the end of the fiscal year. This stands in stark contrast to House Republicans, who have refused to fund DHS unless the legislation also targets DREAMers, kids who were brought to this country through no fault of their own.
