Johnson: Americans Want Leadership; Obama Offers Division

Statement

Sen. Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, made these remarks on Tuesday:

"In such uncertain times, Americans are hoping to find safety and security, and they are hungering for effective leadership. Instead of providing that responsible leadership, President Obama will use his State of the Union address to make the case for policies that divide Americans rather than pursuing action toward achieving goals that unite us.

"As a result, after the pomp and circumstance of this evening, most of his proposals will quickly fade away as the nation turns its attention to the serious problems facing America and looks for responsible leadership elsewhere.

"I intend to use my responsibility as chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs to provide that leadership. In organizing the committee, I have developed a mission statement and an initial set of priorities. Under my chairmanship, the committee's mission will be pretty simple: To enhance the economic and national security of America.

"Our initial priorities include securing our border, addressing the issue of cybersecurity, protecting critical infrastructure, easing the regulatory burden on job creators, and reducing the duplication, waste, fraud, and abuse throughout the federal government.

"It is an important agenda and significant responsibility. Regardless of party affiliation, we all want a prosperous, safe, and secure America. I will do everything in my power to find common ground to pursue our shared goals and aspirations."
