Quigley Invites Elmhurst Teacher as State of the Union Guest

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) announced that York Community High School teacher Patty Iverson, of Elmhurst, Illinois, will be his guest to the State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 20th. Rep. Quigley's selection underscores the importance of education in the state of our nation and the economic opportunities access to quality education creates. He plans to visit York Community High School to discuss the SOTU with her students next month.

"Every day our teachers challenge and educate our students, but we must provide them with the proper support they need in the classroom. Education can open doors to endless opportunities and no one knows that more than our teachers. It is because of the encouragement, motivation and passion of my freshman year biology teacher, Mr. Williams, that I am an environmentalist, an issue that has been close to my heart ever since. Fifty-two percent of public school students in Illinois are low-income, but with a quality education, these students have a better opportunity to compete in today's workforce," said Rep. Quigley. "In Illinois, we have more than 130,000 public school teachers, and I'm honored to have one of those teachers join me for the president's State of the Union. I want to thank Mrs. Iverson and all of our teachers for serving not only in the classroom but in our communities. Mrs. Iverson is a volleyball coach, and extracurricular activities like volleyball can create team building and leadership skills that aid in professional development. I'm committed to providing our teachers the support they need to help our children succeed. I look forward to the president's SOTU address and his plans for continued educational opportunities that support students and teachers."
