Westerman Comments on Obama's Succumbing to 529 Pressure

Statement

Congressman Bruce Westerman (R-Hot Springs) issued the following statement on President Barack Obama's decision to back down from a previously announced plan to tax 529 college savings plans that benefits hardworking Arkansas families saving for their children's education:

"Finally, the president has listened to the American people and Members of Congress, who made clear to the president that his plan was an unfair punishment for doing the right thing -- working hard and saving for their child's future. The president could stand to learn from his predecessor, President Clinton, who implemented policies of a Republican-led Congress, which went a long way to improve America and his own legacy. I hope this is the beginning of a change in the president's thinking, moving to do the right thing for Fourth District residents and hardworking Americans. But I'm hesitant to expect any change I can believe in, not after six years of the president's reckless policies and complete disregard for the wellbeing of Fourth District residents."
