STATEMENT OF U.S. REP. JIM MCGOVERN: EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT COALITION

February 4, 2005

"I want to commend the Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition for coming together in this effort. I continue to believe that tax relief should be targeted at those families that need it most - those in the middle and those struggling to get into the middle. That's why the EITC is so vital. Approximately 20% of Worcester taxpayers who are eligible for the EITC do not take advantage of the program. That's far too high. Low-income working families struggle daily just to pay for heat, food, rent, gas and other necessities. By providing free tax preparation, the Coalition puts money in the pockets of those who deserve - and have earned - it most."
