Hoyer Statement on the Passage of House Republicans' Partisan Amendments that Deport DREAMers, Risk National Security

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans passed partisan, anti-immigration amendments that threaten funding for the Department of Homeland Security:

"I was deeply disappointed that the House passed an appropriation bill for the Department of Homeland Security that included partisan, poison-pill amendments to deport DREAMers and tear immigrant families apart. Had these amendments not been added, the underlying bill itself would have passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, reflecting a real compromise to invest in our national security.

"Once again, the House Republican leadership has chosen to appease the most extreme wing of their party instead of governing responsibly from the center. I urge the Speaker and Majority Leader to bring a clean version of the Department of Homeland Security appropriation bill back to the Floor so Democrats and Republicans can vote together to send it to the Senate free from these amendments that run counter to our values as a nation of immigrants and a land of freedom and opportunity."
