Van Hollen Statement on the Passing of Congressman Bob Matsui
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) released the following statement on the death of Congressman Robert T. Matsui (D-CA):
"With the passing of Bob Matsui, our country has lost a great leader. During his tenure in the United States House of Representatives, Bob Matsui was a champion for civil rights and a leader in the effort to protect Social Security.
"I had a great respect and admiration for Bob's courage. Rising from imprisonment in an interment camp to the marbled halls of Congress, Bob Matsui embodied the American dream and spirit. He never lost hope in the promise of America and inspired us all to work for a brighter future.
"Bob Matsui served his constituency and his country with grace and dignity. He will be sorely missed and long remembered.
"Now, it is with great sadness that I join my colleagues in mourning his loss. He was a quintessential public servant, a devoted husband and father, and a respected leader. I was proud to call him a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."
