Congressman-Elect Zeldin Recommended to Serve on Three Important U.S. House Committees

Congressman-Elect Lee Zeldin (R, C-Shirley, NY) announced today that the Republican Steering Committee has recommended his appointment to serve on three U.S. House Committees: Transportation & Infrastructure, Foreign Affairs and Veterans' Affairs. Appointment to three House Committees is a rare opportunity for a freshman Congressman.

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has jurisdiction over legislation relating to all forms of transportation and infrastructure in the United States, including aviation, waterways, highways, bridges and railroads, as well as clean water management.

Congressman-Elect Zeldin said, "Serving on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will put me in a very strong position to advocate for my constituents on Long Island. This committee has jurisdiction over many federal agencies that are important to the issues we face here on Long Island, including the Army Corps of Engineers, which will help us advocate for our shoreline and Sandy recovery and the FAA, which will help us deal with the helicopter noise challenges and the air traffic controller consolidation."

The Foreign Affairs Committee has jurisdiction over legislation regarding our national security and relations with foreign countries. As a U.S. Army veteran with over 11 years of military service, Congressman-Elect Zeldin will bring his insight and firsthand experiences to best serve on this committee as well as Veterans Affairs. He will be the only Republican member of Congress from New York to serve on this committee.

Congressman-Elect Zeldin continued, "It's essential that we are always doing everything in our power to protect America's interests at home and abroad. With the turmoil and unrest we see in the Middle East and around the world, now is the time for a stronger, more consistent foreign policy that understands that our enemies do not respect weakness, only strength. Meanwhile, we must start building stronger relationships with our nation's strongest allies in the world like Israel."

The Veterans Affairs Committee has jurisdiction over legislation relating to veterans, as well as jurisdiction over the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Congressman-Elect Zeldin stated, "Suffolk County is home to the highest number of veterans in New York State. It's crucial that our veterans, who have been willing to sacrifice everything in defense of our constitution, freedoms and liberties, are given the best possible opportunities and care upon their return home from military service. I am very proud to still serve as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves and protecting our veterans has been and always will be one of my highest priorities."

Congressman-Elect Zeldin will begin his committee assignments once he is sworn into office January 6, 2014.
