Ayotte Statement on Nomination of Ash Carter to be Secretary of Defense

Statement

Date: Dec. 5, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding the president's nomination of Dr. Ashton Carter to be the next Secretary of Defense:

"Ash Carter is a respected and well-qualified nominee to lead the Department of Defense, and I admire his commitment to "keep faith' with our troops.

"The individual who leads the Pentagon must possess an intense focus on providing our troops what they need, a willingness to overturn misguided service proposals, a commitment to root out waste, a clear understanding of the threats our nation faces, and the ability to effectively advocate for the defense strategy and budget necessary to protect our country.

"During the confirmation process, there are many difficult and important questions that must be asked about the administration's approach to foreign policy and how to keep America safe, and I look forward to questioning Dr. Carter about his views on how to best maintain America's military readiness and protect our national security."
