Pete Sessions Responds to President Obama's Use of Executive Fiat to Grant Blanket Amnesty

Statement

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement in response to President Obama's plan to unconstitutionally use executive fiat to grant blanket amnesty:

"President Obama's decision today to unilaterally grant blanket amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants is an egregious abuse of power that blatantly disregards the Constitution. Blanket amnesty by executive fiat sets a dangerous precedent by encouraging those who have knowingly broken the law while ignoring Congress' role in fixing it.

"As a proud Texan, I understand the need to reform our broken immigration system. However, the President's plan will only make a dangerous situation at the border worse while illegally circumventing the constitutional lawmaking process. If the President were serious about immigration reform, he would allow the American people to work their will through their elected representatives in Congress and give us the time necessary to pass legislation to his desk. Instead, he has chosen to set our nation further back from achieving meaningful reform based upon the rule of law.

"For true immigration reform to be effective we must first and foremost secure our borders, strengthen interior enforcement, and prosecute and deport criminal aliens who are currently in the United States. Next, we should establish a true guest worker program that adequately safeguards our nation's social programs. I remain committed to diligently working with my colleagues in the House of Representatives and the Senate to offer real meaningful solutions that address the problems of our severely broken immigration system and are supported by the American people."
