Representative James Lankford (R-Okla.) issued the following statement today after the House passed and he supported the ABLE Act, which would extend American families utilizing federal disability benefits the option of opening a tax-exempt savings account, which is currently illegal:
"Today, the House took the first step to enable American families currently utilizing federal disability programs to open tax-exempt savings accounts, which they are prohibited from doing now. It is right to allow American families lawfully utilizing federal safety net programs to also save for their children's unique educational needs, medical costs or to help them supplement their government assistance. Today's bill expands options for families, and now Congress must continue the hard work of addressing the current fraud problems in the Social Security Disability program to ensure we preserve the funds for the truly disabled."
