Ruling in Van Hollen v. FEC is a Victory for Democracy

Press Release

Date: Nov. 25, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the District Court for the District of Columbia's ruling in Van Hollen v. Federal Election Commission (FEC). The Court decided that the FEC's restriction on campaign donor disclosure for "electioneering communication" was arbitrary and not supported by the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act. As a result, the Court struck down the limitation in the regulations that enabled donors to evade disclosure:

"Today the District Court for the District of Columbia handed down a victory for democracy. In light of the record level of outside secret money funneled into the recent elections, this decision will greatly improve the much needed transparency of "electioneering communications' that voters deserve in determining who is trying to influence their votes."
