Congressman-Elect Zeldin Calls Seven-Month Extension on Iran Nuclear Agreement a Windfall Benefit to Iran

Statement

Date: Nov. 25, 2014

Congressman-Elect Lee M. Zeldin (R, C- Shirley) today released the following statement on the decision to declare a seven-month extension to the Iran nuclear agreement:

"The Iranian regime has shown no indication that it's willing to abandon its nuclear program. Declaring a seven-month extension will provide Iran with billions of dollars in relief from sanctions, as Iran continues to successfully buy itself more time. This agreement is a windfall benefit to Iran, a nation that continues to pursue nuclear capability. This is a serious national security threat to both America and our strongest ally, Israel. We should be increasing sanctions on Iran, not reducing sanctions. Iran does not respect weakness, only strength. Congress should provide our negotiators with additional leverage by passing new sanctions this year and increasing pressure on Tehran."
