U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding another delay in diplomatic negotiations to force Iran to comply with international limits on its nuclear program in exchange for reduced sanctions:
"This is further evidence that Iran is not under enough pressure to reach a deal," Fischer said. "Additional measures are necessary to penalize the regime for violating its international obligations in relentlessly pursuing its nuclear ambitions. While we all wish to see a negotiated deal, it is clear that this is unlikely, under the current circumstances. I hope the senate will strengthen the hands of our negotiators with additional sanctions next year."
Members of the United Nations Security Council, Germany and Iran were unable to reach an agreement by today's deadline to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, and have extended negotiations to July 2015.
