A Victory for Our Progressive Values
Statement
Friends,
Thanks to your hard work and support, we won a resounding victory last night in Oregon.
In 2008, we won very narrowly in a great year for Democrats. In 2014, facing millions of dollars of Koch Brothers attack ads, against an opponent heralded by Republicans, and amidst a national tidal wave, things could have gone very wrong.
Instead, we won big. We won because you were with me early, you helped me stand up to the onslaught of special interest attacks, and you were working hard at the end, knocking on doors and making sure we got the vote out. The other side may have deep pockets, but we showed yesterday what a grassroots campaign can do!
Our victory sends a powerful message: when you stand up for working Americans, when you fight for a fair shot for everyone - a chance to work a good job at a living wage and go to college and retire with dignity - working Americans stand up for you!
We took on the powerful special interests and we won. Because our values are Oregon values and American values.
Of course, while we celebrated here in Oregon, many of our friends across the country faced some tough defeats. Republican control of the Senate means the work we have ahead to defend our progressive values and protect the gains we've made will be tougher than ever.
I'm ready to get back to work. Regardless of what the new Congress looks like, I'm not about to let far-right Republicans take us backward.
We need to fight for an economy that prioritizes good-paying jobs for the middle class.
We need to fight for a chance at a good education for all of our kids, from preschool all the way up through college.
We need to fight to protect our economy and our environment from the crisis of climate change.
We need to fight for pay equity, and the minimum wage, and full equality for LGBT Americans, and to protect Social Security and Medicare from the efforts to shred the promise we made our seniors.
I'm fired up for six more years to serve Oregon and keep working to make this country and our world a better place.
