Statement

A Message from Congressman Garamendi:

This week, I had the honor of welcoming my friend and mentor, President Bill Clinton, and my colleague Congressman Ami Bera at a Get Out the Vote Rally on the UC Davis campus.

President Clinton made it perfectly clear what's at stake in this election. The polarization in Washington is hollowing out America's middle class. Our inability to reach consensus is poisonous to America's economy. It's a lesson especially important to the UC Davis community, full of bright minds who are able to achieve greatness yet are apprehensive about the world they are about to inherit.

"If you don't like the polarization in Washington, you must vote this year," President Clinton implored. He emphasized the harsh reality of our elections: when more Americans vote, leaders who stand with working families win. When voters stay home, we don't.

When I served as President Clinton's Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Interior Department, I witnessed firsthand the partisan battles in Congress, but never have I seen Congress as divided as it is today. That's why I've worked exhaustively to develop bipartisan consensus. My work on water policy, wildfire prevention, agriculture, infrastructure, and more is rooted in the belief that I was elected to get things done for my constituents, and that requires lawmakers willing to work across the aisle.

I hope you'll take a moment to watch this video which includes highlights from the Get Out the Vote rally. Even more importantly, I hope you'll work to Get Out the Vote among your family, friends, and neighbors. Turnout is expected to be very low, and while that's bad for our democracy, it means every vote counts even more than usual.
