Lujan Grisham Statement on Agreement to Reform Albuquerque Police Department

U.S. Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) issued the following statement on the agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the city of Albuquerque to reform the Albuquerque Police Department:

"While I am disappointed that the Department of Justice had to force these reforms, I am pleased that APD will be subject to a court-enforceable agreement to implement the changes.

"I appreciate that this settlement mandates the use of on-body cameras, strengthens training and accountability for officers, and requires continued community involvement. I also agree with the mandate to dismantle the repeat offender program.

"However, I continue to be troubled by the culture at APD that led to the violation of civil rights. Worse, it appears some of the same people who contributed to that culture will simply be moved into new positions without being held accountable.

"In addition, I believe the Mayor has an opportunity to recognize that mental health is a significant issue in this community. Instead of dismantling mental health services like the state has done, there is an opportunity for the Mayor to fully invest in an effective behavioral health system that serves the community."
