Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Co-Chairs of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus -- U.S. Reps. Sander Levin (D-MI), Jim Gerlach (R-PA) and Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) -- today issued the following statement regarding the illegal detention of Ukrainian pilot Nadia Savchenko by the Russian Federation:

"We join Ambassador Baer and the European Union in calling for Nadia Savchenko's immediate release from Russian custody. We are gravely concerned by reports of her transfer to Serbsky State Scientific Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry for psychological evaluation, and by delays in her hearings. We are fully aware that such delays and abuse of psychiatry are well-known tactics used for political purposes against opponents. We strongly call on Russia to honor its international obligations and to abide by the rule of law, and we call for the immediate release of Nadia Savchenko."
