Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro Budget Conference Report in the U.S. House

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement on the budget conference report that is expected to pass the U.S. House today.

"By deepening income inequality, exploding the deficit and raising the barriers for those working to do better, this budget sends a message that hard work is not valued by this Congress. That is the message this majority sends when it dedicates another $100 billion-plus for tax cuts benefiting the very wealthiest among us at the same time it argues we need to cut guaranteed benefits in Social Security - the most efficient middle-class retirement program in our nation's history and a program that rewards work.

"At a time when health care costs have risen by 50 percent in the last 3 years alone, this budget eviscerates Medicaid, leaving many families and children with nowhere to turn for medical care, and many seniors with no way to afford long-term care.

"A government's budget should encourage fiscal, personal and social responsibility. In that sense, it should reflect the values and priorities of Americans. But by deepening income inequality and raising the barriers for those working to do better, this budget does neither. If anything, it reflects priorities that are out of step with ordinary Americans.
