Sessions: House Approves Legislation to Defeat ISIL

Press Release

Date: Sept. 17, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement regarding House adoption of an amendment offered by Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) to the Continuing Appropriations Resolution addressing "train & equip" authority for our military commanders in the ongoing fight to defeat ISIL:

"This amendment is an important short-term step to protect the United States and our allies from the threat posed by the terrorist group known as ISIL. It strengthens congressional oversight of the Administration's policies in the region by ensuring that Congress has the information it needs regarding the effort to train and equip properly vetted elements of the Syrian opposition in the fight against ISIL. I would like to thank Chairman McKeon for his leadership in helping protect the American people and our interests abroad. I look forward to continued debate about our larger policies in Iraq and Syria as Congress works with the Administration to craft a viable and sustainable strategy that will stabilize the region."
