Below is a statement from Rep. Bill Keating, Ranking Member of the Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats Subcommittee, on the recent developments in Ukraine:
"Last week's unauthorized Russian "humanitarian convoy' into Eastern Ukraine, the capture of 10 Russian soldiers on Ukrainian land, and yesterday's column of tanks and armor entering Ukraine represent unprecedented violations of Ukraine's sovereign territory by the Russian Federation," said Rep. Keating. "Even in the midst of a propaganda war centering on what role Russia is, in fact, playing, that facts on the ground remain abundantly clear. Russia's actions in Ukraine, which include the potential opening of a new southern front in recent days, represent a clear military escalation and should be immediately addressed by the international community. Furthermore, I've grown increasingly concerned by the flagrant human rights violations committed by the Russian-backed "separatists' in Ukraine, which include the use of sexual violence against women, humiliating and degrading treatment of prisoners, and of course, the shooting down of a passenger jet carrying 298 innocent international civilians. I urge the international community to see these violations for what they are and take action accordingly."
