DeMaio Critical of Obama Administration Over Choice in Ebola Czar

Statement

Carl DeMaio today released this statement in wake of the news that President Obama selected a politician to become the Administration's Ebola Czar:

"Today, President Obama finally got around to appointing an Ebola Czar. The President's leadership has been slow and too political in nature.

After downplaying the chances that Ebola would become an issue for Americans, local communities are now scrambling to understand the real impact. The President continues to dither about temporarily stopping incoming flights from West Africa where the crisis is developing.

While the President says he isn't opposed to ending the flights from West Africa, he isn't taking action either. Scott Peters, too, has only said that we should "consider" a travel ban from West Africa. Action is needed.

The President's Czar appointee today is a political insider with a legal background. He is the wrong choice. The problem is not a legal issue or a political issue. The problem isn't even an issue that can be solved in Washington, DC. Healthcare workers in local communities are on the front lines and face the most risk.

We need a Czar deeply experienced in public health crises. We need a leader who understands the challenges of nurses and other healthcare workers dealing with this crisis. Local communities need a leader who understands the issue.

Scott Peters must stand up to the leaders of his own party that have been too slow in reacting to the Ebola outbreak. Scott Peters should make clear that politics has no place in a public healthcare emergency."
