Blackburn to Visit Southern Border

Press Release

Date: Oct. 23, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

On Friday, October 24, 2014, Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) will travel to McAllen, Texas, where she will receive a briefing from members of the United States Border Patrol. During her visit to the southern border, Blackburn will also receive a tour of the McAllen Border Patrol Station and the Rio Grande Valley-Centralized Processing Center.

"We all know it's imperative that action is taken to address our nation's border crisis. That is why I worked tirelessly this summer to pass legislation that would freeze DACA and prevent the President from circumventing Congress and granting blanket amnesty to the thousands of illegal immigrants who flood our nation's borders each year," Blackburn said. "The most important step in any effort to stop illegal immigration in this country must be to secure the border. This trip will provide a great opportunity to get a first-hand look at the situation on the southern border, and I am looking forward to hearing directly from our border patrol agents on the frontlines."

Earlier this year the House approved legislation authored by Blackburn to freeze the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and prohibit President Obama from taking future executive actions to expand amnesty for illegal aliens. H.R. 5272 would freeze the DACA program as of July 30, 2014 by prohibiting federal funds or resources from being used to adjudicate new applications under DACA. Blackburn's bill would also prohibit the Obama Administration from authorizing new deferred actions for any class of aliens and prevents authorization for work permits for aliens not lawfully present in the United States. The legislation is one of 387 bills currently sitting on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's desk awaiting action in the Senate.
