PROCLAMATION - LAW DAY MAY 1, 2005

WHEREAS, Law Day is a celebration of our great heritage of liberty, justice and equality under law; and

WHEREAS, a jury of one's peers is a cornerstone of American democracy, and along with voting, is one of the primary ways people take part in the public life of this nation; and

WHEREAS, a trial by jury is guaranteed in the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Amendments to our nation's Constitution; and

WHEREAS, the decisions that jurors make affect millions of lives every day and have a profound impact on our economy and our society, reinforcing our belief that people can be entrusted to make the right decision and that we are an open, democratic government; and

WHEREAS, juries play a central role in American life and it is important to educate our fellow citizens about the rewards and benefits of jury service; and

WHEREAS, all citizens of North Dakota are encouraged to dedicate themselves to preserving and strengthening our nation's jury system; and

NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim
May 1, 2005, LAW DAY in the state of North Dakota.
