PROCLAMATION - CYSTIC FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH - May 2005

WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis is a fatal lung disease characterized by chronic lung infections and digestive disorders and is one of the most common genetic diseases in the United States for which there is no known cure; and

WHEREAS, approximately 30,000 Americans and more than 50 North Dakotans have cystic fibrosis, more than half of them children; and

WHEREAS, prompt, aggressive treatment of the symptoms and access to and coverage for medical care are extending the lives of people who have the disease; and

WHEREAS, education of the public about cystic fibrosis, including its symptoms, increases knowledge and understanding of the disease and promotes early diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, a combination of treatment and genetic research allows a growing number of North Dakotans with cystic fibrosis to be contributing members of our society and economy; and

WHEREAS, all North Dakotans are encouraged to recognize those who live with cystic fibrosis and their families, and medical personnel and non-profit organizations who assist them for their dedication and on-going efforts toward treating the symptoms of the disease and working for an eventual cure; and

NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim May 2005, CYSTIC FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH in the state of North Dakota.
