Proclamation - Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week

PROCLAMATION

SEVERE SUMMER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK

APRIL 25-29, 2005

WHEREAS, emergency preparedness is a function of government, the private sector and individuals; and

WHEREAS, severe summer storms can cause damaging winds, hail, rural fires, flash flooding, hazardous materials releases and power outages, and have the potential of being deadly and causing serious damage to property; and

WHEREAS, experience has demonstrated that a well-informed and prepared public can better cope with and survive life threatening severe summer storms, so North Dakota individuals, families, schools, and businesses are encouraged to develop a disaster plan with protective actions to follow when severe weather strikes; and

WHEREAS, the National Weather Service and the North Dakota Division of Emergency Management will be working with local emergency managers, state and local officials, volunteer agencies and businesses to inform and educate the public on steps that should be taken to prepare for and survive severe weather hazards and the potential disasters that this summer may bring; and

WHEREAS, government agencies, as well as employers, strongly recommend that citizens become informed of available community warning systems, including outdoor warnings, all-hazards radio, the emergency alert system, and other radio and television broadcasts; and

NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim
April 25-29, 2005, SEVERE SUMMER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK in the state of North Dakota.
