New York State Senator Zeldin Supports Women's Initiatives, Part 1

Statement

Part 1: Providing Our Daughters With More -- and Better -- Opportunities

New York State Senator Lee M. Zeldin, Republican and Conservative Party candidate for Congress in New York's First Congressional District, today released the first of a four part series of statements this week on supporting women's initiatives.

"My identical twin daughters, Arianna and Mikayla, are the two most important people in my life. They motivate my wife, Diana, and I, every day to provide them and their generation with a world that has more and better opportunities. As a country, we've made huge strides in women's equality, but there's still far more to be accomplished. As a father and as a New York State Senator, I've always made women's initiatives one of my top priorities.

In the State Senate, I've supported countless measures to ensure that women are protected and given access to opportunity, security and prosperity. Just to list a few, in 2012 and 2013, I voted in favor of the Senate's Women's Equality Agenda, which passed the Senate in both years. This robust legislation would provide women with various protections, including equal pay for equal work.

As a Senator, I've been an advocate for victims of sexual and domestic violence, supporting and sponsoring numerous proposals to protect victims, in order to ensure their safety and protect their freedoms.

I also voted to create a work force training program within the Department of Labor. I fought for this program because with the current state of the economy, women are really struggling. This program would help women to obtain higher paying jobs and give them access to better opportunities to provide for themselves and their families.

Under the Obama administration and the current Congress, women are suffering. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 780,000 women became unemployed under the Obama administration. There are currently 4.9 million unemployed women in the United States. We need representatives in Washington who will focus on growing the economy and create good paying private sector jobs.

While many women face losing their health insurance plans, losing their doctors, or both, other women see their insurance premiums skyrocket. Yet my opponent continues to defend his bad vote on Obamacare. We must replace the disastrous Obamacare with a health insurance system that costs less and guarantees more freedom, certainty and security to women.

As a country we are faced with many decisions, but women's equality shouldn't be one of them. Fighting for women has always been an important priority as a New York State Senator. I pledge to take my fight to Washington, for my daughters and for yours."
