Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) today reiterated her support for Ukraine's request for additional military assistance in the fight against Russia's incursion. She released the following statement after hearing from Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko:
"The consequences of standing idly by while Russia continues to degrade the territorial integrity of Ukraine are clear. If this incursion is allowed to continue -- and violence is still ongoing, in spite of the September 5th ceasefire -- there will be serious long-term consequences for the U.S. and Europe. Ukrainian President Poroshenko delivered a powerful message to Congress this morning, and I support his call for meaningful American military assistance for Ukrainian forces, and stiffer, more painful economic sanctions for Russia.
"By providing lethal and non-lethal aid and training, we can both support Ukraine's peaceful aspirations and contribute to the stability of the region and safety of our allies. We have to act in a way that takes seriously the threat of Russian aggression against its peaceful, sovereign neighbor."
