Collins Bill Improves Care for Newborns of Veterans

Congressman Doug Collins this week introduced legislation improving care for the newborn babies of mothers who receive healthcare through the VA.

H.R. 5475, The Newborn Care Improvement Act, authorizes hospital stays of up to 14 days for newborns under VA care. Previous provisions only allowed for a maximum seven day hospital stay. Doubling the care time offered provides relief for those families facing infant illness or complications immediately after birth.

Congressman Collins said, "A new mother under VA care has given selflessly to her country. She deserves her country's full support as she gives selflessly to her newborn child, especially if her child requires a little extra, expert care in the early days." Collins added, "We've spoken often in the last several years of updating policies to care for the medical needs of this generation of veterans. With more women in the ranks than ever before, improving maternity care is the right thing to do."
