Bilirakis: More Regulations of Lab Tests = Higher Healthcare Costs

Press Release

Date: Sept. 11, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Gus Bilirakis, member of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, today questioned witnesses regarding innovation in laboratory developed tests during a 21st Century Cures Initiative hearing.

"Healthcare costs will increase if the FDA imposes an additional layer of regulations on laboratories developing diagnostic tests. We should be working to encourage innovation in diagnostic testing, rather than adding more regulations which will impose additional burdens and slow improvement of lab-developed tests. Better diagnosis means preventing or treating diseases sooner, while delivering higher quality health care at lower costs. The FDA's regulations will achieve the opposite. More regulations will not benefit the patient."

Representative Bilirakis held two 21st Century Cures roundtables in Florida in August. During the second roundtable, a witness spoke about the detriments of addition regulations on lab-developed tests.
