Aguilar: We Have to Work Across the Aisle to Balance Budgets Responsibly

Today, Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar, Democratic candidate for Congress in California's 31st district, released the following statement calling on Congress to put an end to the dysfunction and partisan posturing and produce bipartisan solutions that invest in our economy and create jobs. As both the Mayor of Redlands and a member of the city's council, Aguilar worked across the aisle to solve the city's budget crisis turning a multi-million dollar deficit into a surplus, passing balanced budgets for five straight years, improving the city's credit rating and boosting the business climate in Redlands.

"San Bernardino County needs a representative in Washington who has experience negotiating across the aisle, making tough choices and getting results," Aguilar said. "That's what we did in Redlands, and that's what I'll do in Washington. This community deserves better than the inaction they are seeing in Congress right now."

"Budgets are moral documents, and they reflect our priorities," Aguilar continued. "My priorities are education and the economy and fighting to protect seniors and veterans. We have to work across party lines to balance budgets responsibly, and across the board cuts are dangerous. Programs that work need to be protected, and programs that are outdated and inefficient need to be eliminated. That process takes work and the willingness to negotiate with members of the opposite party. It's a part of the job in Congress and something I have a record of doing in the Inland Empire."
