Aguilar Statement on Hispanic Heritage Month

Statement

Date: Sept. 15, 2014
Location: San Bernardino, CA

Today, in honor of the beginning of Hispanic Heritage month, Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar, Democratic candidate for California's 31st Congressional District, released the following statement:

"Hispanic Heritage month is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all of the contributions Latinos have made to our community and country. From wonderful artists to scientists, to proud service members to dedicated civil rights activists, Hispanic Americans make our middle class stronger and our nation more diverse.

"As a Mexican-American, I know that Latino families want what all San Bernardino County families want - the opportunity to succeed in the greatest country in the world. We need to pass comprehensive immigration reform to secure our borders, unite families and strengthen our communities and economy. But immigration reform is just one part. In order to really grow our middle class and make sure that the next generation has a shot at the American Dream, let's also focus on improving education, investing in infrastructure, fighting for cleaner air and creating good paying jobs. By strengthening the middle class, we all succeed."
