David Young would make an excellent congressman, his former boss said Tuesday.
"He's got good judgment and is ready to go to work on Day 1," said U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley.

The senator and his former chief-of-staff kicked off a four-day tour of the 3rd Congressional District in Council Bluffs on Tuesday. Young is the Republican Party candidate for the district, which includes Council Bluffs and all of southwest Iowa to Des Moines.

"He did a good job of making sure my staff was well prepared, and he had to communicate with Iowans daily," Grassley said of Young at their appearance at the Hy-Vee on West Broadway. "He's for limited government and being fiscally conservative. He believes in accountability in government."

Iowans have voiced to him their concerns about gridlock and partisanship in Washington, Young said.

"I've seen that up close," he said. "I know what can be done (to end that)."

More and more rules and regulations are impacting farmers in a negative way, he added. This includes those coming from the Environmental Protection Agency, such as those regulating dust and methane and redefine water under the Clean Water Act.

"The EPA needs a reality check."

Iowans, especially those entering the business world, want tax codes that offer a sense of permanency and certainty, he added.

"If they know what the rules are, they can plan 20 or 30 years down the road, and that is what is necessary."

He supports revoking passports of those who declare their affiliation with terror groups, Young said.
