Peters Statement on Federal Disaster Declaration for Southeastern Michigan

Today, President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the State of Michigan that will provide federal aid to help communities in the Detroit metro area recover from damage caused by severe storms and flooding in August. Last week, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14) joined members of the Michigan delegation in a letter of support calling for the disaster declaration.

"Last month's flooding had a serious impact on communities across the Greater Detroit area, causing more than $1 billion in damage to homes and businesses," said Rep. Peters. "I'm dedicated to working with our delegation and Governor Snyder to ensure that the people of Michigan receive the critical resources they need to recover and rebuild."

The federal disaster declaration covers damage that occurred August 11-13, 2014, and includes aid for individuals, public facilities and assistance to reduce long-term risks from natural hazards. Individual assistance includes reimbursement for homeowners to repair and replace damage from the flood that is not covered by insurance.

To apply for assistance, individuals in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties must register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in one of the following ways:
