Bennet Marks Beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month

Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today marked the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The festivities, which occur from September 15 to October 15, celebrate the many histories and cultures which make up the Latino community and the countless contributions Latinos have made to the country.

"One of Colorado's greatest attributes is its rich cultural diversity. Over the next month, we'll celebrate our thriving Latino community and recognize the many contributions it has made to the heritage of our state and our nation.

"As a senator representing Colorado and as superintendent of Denver Public Schools, I've had the opportunity to work side-by-side with Latino families, students, and local leaders who have fought to create more opportunities for the next generation. We've made progress, but there is still much work to be done. It begins with fixing our broken immigration system to protect families and boost the economy, as well as ensuring our schools prepare our kids for success in college and their careers, and that we build an economy that creates good-paying 21st-century jobs right here in Colorado."

Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as a week-long celebration under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was expanded to a month-long observance under President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
