Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement in honor of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964, which protected 9.1 million acres of federal land.

"The protected areas of the United States, such as the Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn and Queens, are some of the greatest resources we share as Americans -- natural resources we have a responsibility to protect for the generations that will follow us. Even in most populated metropolitan area in the United States, we have access to nature by subway, bus, bicycle, or car. Let us honor this legacy by preserving it for the future."
