U.S. Senator Dick Durbin attended a private fundraiser Saturday evening held at Quincy University.

Senator Durbin said this week he asked the transportation committee to keep an eye on rail service in the upper Midwest and Canada.

A lot of rail cars are being used to carry oil in that part of the country.

He says farmers here in the Midwest should have bumper crops this year, and rail cars need to be made available here.

He also says his highest priority this election year is letting people know what it takes to create good paying jobs in Illinois.

He says it's gotten better, but there's still some concern.

"We're coming out of the recession slowly, but there's also a problem with jobs that don't pay enough money. There's a problem with students who have too much college debt and being unable to pay it back. These are the main working class issues that, I think are still front and center," Durbin said.

Senator Durbin will also speak in the morning at the Cathedral of Worship in Quincy.

He's running against Republican Jim Oberweis in November.
