Providing An Affordable, Quality Education

Dick Durbin worked long hours in the meat packing and stock yards of East St. Louis in order to help pay his own way through college. He knows that an affordable education is essential to growing the middle class and creating economic opportunity.

Just last year, he led the effort that produced a bipartisan compromise capping student loan rates and reducing the cost of a college education by $1,000 over the life of Illinois students and their families, and millions more nationwide.

In the face of stiff global economic competition, Dick is pushing for greater emphasis on math, science, technology and engineering in our schools, including incentives for students to seek careers in these fields and grants and loan forgiveness for professionals to teach these subjects in high-need schools.
