Peters and Historic Vehicle Association Announce National Historic Vehicle Register Act Ahead of Dream Cruise

Today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14), co-chair of the Congressional Auto Caucus, and the Historic Vehicle Association (HVA) announced the "National Historic Vehicle Register Act of 2014," which creates the National Historic Vehicle Register to document and preserve American automotive history. Rep. Peters sponsored the legislation with Rep. John Campbell (CA-45), his Congressional Auto Caucus co-chair.

"The American automobile and Michigan's automotive industry have had an immense impact on our history and our everyday lives, and we have a duty to celebrate and preserve our automotive heritage," said Rep. Peters. "I'm proud to announce this legislation ahead of Michigan's annual Dream Cruise celebration on historic Woodward Avenue, which continues to show the importance of the automobile in our culture every year."

The legislation creates the National Historic Vehicle Register, and authorizes the Department of Interior to work with the Historic Vehicle Association to document and preserve automotive heritage. The National Historic Vehicle Register will include a narrative describing each historic vehicle and its significance, a photographic record of the historic vehicle and line drawings or engineering drawings of the historic vehicle.

"The Historic Vehicle Association is focused on ensuring our Nation's automotive heritage is more broadly appreciated and carefully preserved for future generations," said Mark Gessler, President of the HVA. "We are gratified for Congressman Peter's introduction of H.R. Bill 5366 and opportunity to broaden awareness concerning preservation of America's automotive heritage."

As Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Auto Caucus, Peters has been instrumental in drafting legislation to support the American auto industry, which is driving economic growth and creating new jobs, innovation and investments in Michigan.
