Issue Position

Working to protect Alaskans, particularly the most vulnerable, has always been a critical component of Dan's public service career. Having the opportunity to serve in a leadership role to find solutions to these critical issues has been an honor.

As Attorney General, Dan spearheaded the "Choose Respect" campaign, a comprehensive strategy that addresses Alaska's horrendous levels of sexual assault and domestic violence against women and children. The Choose Respect strategy works to: toughen sentences for sexual assault offenders; expand law enforcement particularly in rural areas; increase services and pro bono legal representation for victims and their families; and undertake a broad-based public campaign to make Alaskans aware of this epidemic. The campaign is focused on giving victims strength and dignity, and encourages all Alaskans to "Choose Respect".

As Attorney General, he put notorious criminals behind bars. He also led efforts to strengthen Alaska's criminal justice system through increased sentences for sexual assault offenders, a full overhaul of the state's bail system, and enhancing the ability of prosecutors to convict those involved in human trafficking and child pornography.
