Horsford Statement On Mt. Charleston State Of Emergency

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) released the following statement in response to the Clark County Commissioners declaring a state of emergency for parts of Mt. Charleston, including the residential areas of Rainbow Canyon and Kyle Canyon, following flash flooding that has destroyed homes and roads in the area:

"My sympathies go out to all the residents who have been affected by this disaster. After visiting Mt. Charleston on Monday, I saw how devastating the flash flooding has been to these residential communities. With this declaration of emergency, we must act quickly to get funding to local agencies to help with the cleanup and reconstruction of the area. I will work with elected officials at the state and local levels to coordinate funding for a sustained and permanent infrastructure solution."

Last July, the "Carpenter 1 Fire" burned over 28,000 acres of forest and grass lands in the Spring Mountain Range, and was not contained until September, 2013. The fire created a high risk of flash flooding and erosion in the area. Last week, intense thunderstorms and rainfall created fast moving floodwaters, which destroyed roads and homes in the Rainbow and Kyle Canyon communities.
