A strong proponent of ending illegal immigration, Cotton said he spoke to supporters at a fish fry in Hot Springs Village Tuesday night about the "crisis we have at our southern border."

"We have hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants crossing our border now, and that is a direct result of Barack Obama's presidential amnesty two years ago, and Mark Pryor's vote for amnesty for 12 million illegal immigrants. It shouldn't be surprising when we're giving amnesty away that more and more people show up at our southern border," he said.

As a solution to ending the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States, Cotton said a fence should be built.

"We don't want to have to send the National Guard to the border, which is why we should have built a fence long ago. Eight years ago, Congress passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, but because of liberals like Mark Pryor, we've never adequately funded it and built it.

"Fences work. Everybody knows that fences work. They just sit there in the sun, the rain, the cold, they don't ask for time off, don't need higher wages or benefits. They just sit there and work. We should have built a fence long ago. We don't have one right now that would be stopping this border crisis if we did," he said.

Cotton said San Diego once had a high rate of illegal immigration, as did Israel, which experienced high rates of illegal migrant workers coming into the country from East Africa, but the influx stopped after fences were built in both locations.

Obviously there would still have to be border patrol agents to patrol the fence and advance technology could be used to surveil the fence, but in the end, a fence is the best, simplest, and lowest cost way to secure the border," he said.
