U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is hoping to help Illinois' research universities with a push for changes when it comes to research funding.

Durbin met with a group of research professors and students at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine.

"We're falling behind. We're falling behind China [and] Europe," Durbin said. "We're falling behind the world in medical research and most Americans are shocked to hear that. We need to take this seriously. When people start talking about cutting back in federal spending, we've got to think twice in the area of medical research."

Durbin's American Cures Act would augment federal appropriations for bio-medical research with a mandatory trust fund. He says there is bi-partisan support.
