Issue Position: Common Core and School Choice

Issues: Education

Big Government has overstepped its constitutional boundaries on far too many occasions. One example is through the installation of nationally sponsored Common Core education standards. The best way to educate our children is not to teach them how to pass a test. The best way to educate our children is through individualized attention with flexibility to adapt each child's learning needs. The only way to accomplish this is to get the massive "one size fits all" approach of Common Core out of our schools and return control of our education systems back to our local school boards.

Further, our education system is failing many Ohioans. While Ohio has many excellent school districts, there are many districts, especially in areas with the highest poverty, that simply do not make the grade. The real losers are Ohio's students in those districts. Those students are not getting the quality education necessary to improve their life conditions, which is driving them down the same path as the generations before them.

Rather than send our hard-earned money to failing school districts, let's give our money directly to the students and their parents, so they can make decisions about what is best for their own lives. Through school vouchers, Ohio would encourage personal growth, accountability, and an improvement of one's conditions.
